Composed of thousands of real letters from WWII servicemen, this campaign advertises the upcoming TVNZ series “The Pacific”

It’s not too often we’re blown away by a poster campaign but this one even had us doubling back for the second and third look. The effect of thousands of letters stapled to a wall in central Auckland dancing in dappled autumn light is something that these photos just can’t convey.

If this campaign is an insight for what lies ahead, we’re in for a treat on Mondays at 8:30pm on One.

TVNZ wanted this marketing campaign to portray the reality of war accurately and to honour the legacy of the men who fought, not by glamorising it but by accurately reflecting their war experiences.

TVNZ have permission to use the letters in the campaign from the writers and their families as well as the Navy. In fact, the family of the young man whose letter to his mother was used in the direct mail campaign has specified that it should not be changed in any way.

These authentic letters bring home the truth of the experience of war. This is an important piece of history brilliantly presented through this television production.

TVNZ hope that the marketing campaign will attract as much attention as possible so that New Zealanders have an opportunity to reflect on a part of World War II, closer to home, that has not previously been given the same coverage as other theatres of war.

***THE PACIFIC ***
From the same creative team that brought you the masterfully detailed look at the European Front of World War II in Band Of Brothers 2001, comes the new series The Pacific.
Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg and Gary Goetzman are the force behind this epic drama that will follow the intertwined odysseys of three US Marines during America's battle with the Japanese in the Pacific, during World War II.

The Pacific tracks the intertwined real-life journeys of three U.S. Marines - Robert Leckie (James Badge Dale), Eugene Sledge (Joe Mazzello) and John Basilone (Jon Seda) - across the vast canvas of the Pacific Theatre during World War II.

The miniseries follows these men and their fellow Marines from their first battle with the Japanese on Guadalcanal, through the rain forests of Cape Gloucester and the strongholds of Peleliu, across the bloody sands of Iwo Jima and through the horror of Okinawa, until the war's end in 1945.

The Pacific is based on the books With The Old Breed by Eugene Sledge and Helmet For My Pillow by Robert Leckie, along with interviews conducted by the filmmakers and historian Hugh Ambrose, a consultant on the project.

The Pacific: Mondays at 8:30pm on TVNZ One.
