Poem of the week: ENDANGERED by Andrew M. Bell

There he is,
between the Siberian Tiger and the Maui's Dolphin,
Homo Mobilis Nullius.
She does not own a cellphone.
Text for her is the letters and words
that make up a book.
If he wants to take a picture,
he'll use a camera, thanks.
She doesn't want to download, upload,
freeload, overload,
girl, you've got to carry that load
of debt to the telco company.
He watches movies in the cinema
and he doesn't want to be hooked up
to the internet

BIG DAY OUT 2011 first announcement!

2010 was one for the record books and a stellar year for BDO.

We not only passed the emotional 100 show mark with a bang, but also staged our biggest shows to the largest and our most respectful audiences of our 18 years of BDO. And so we thank you for your continued support in helping us produce the best and safest event possible for the patrons, the bands and our tireless team.

The more you care: the more we care.

Which brings us to 2011.

Poem of the week: "Poem-reply to Christchurch" from Bill Direen

I'm breaking
into pieces.
Our fathers' work
come to nothing.
Our buildings, bricks.
Rubble, our roads and words.
Coloured and plain,
cracked in their frames,
shards, our windows.
They're here, the scientists
whose work may one day save lives.
Saved, our lives;
but our fathers' work
has come to nothing.

----- all the best jay, and all my love to Christchurch

Poem of the week: CHRISTCHURCH by Jay Clarkson

This close cousin is more than bruised

She is bleeding.

Hurled into a thrashing sea

then thrown onto a rocky shore -

she’s okay but not.

She’s hitching rides from friendly strangers

She’s tapping on windows.

I keep turning round.

At night

She wraps her arms around herself

In daylight she’s part child/part adult.

Her new scars are ugly

Raised, red, sore.

Charm threatened

Make-up smeared

Nails broken

From Serbia with love - Phantom Billstickers Poetry Poster Run, Nis, Serbia, Thursday September 9th 2010 by Dusica Simic.

Poetry connects people. Poetry overcomes the barriers. The distance. The impossibility. Friendship does the same in so many wonderful ways. And when you have these two combined, then is born tremendous beauty….the beauty of sharing love and understanding; compassion and fears; hopes, tears, and smiles - positive energy that drags the sad ones out of despair and pushes the joyful ones into deeper joy.

"Nairobi" short story by Brett Lupton.

It’s still early in the evening but it’s already dark outside. Ruth is sitting in front of the dresser mirror, putting on make-up, getting ready for Wendy’s farewell party. Every now and then she stops dabbing at her face to check for a telltale line where the make-up ends and the real Ruth begins. Her bottom lip juts out, the way it does whenever she concentrates hard on something.

Poem of the week: Ready for the Big One (1997) By Bill Direen

(off the Powertool album Human Kindness PT 070)

Don’t take a chance on inadequate supplies
Get ready for the big one get wise
We're ready for it now
Don’t pin yr hopes on an early compromise
They’d really have to rig one get wise
Get ready for it now

We might not have one dollar
we might not have one ounce of cash
we might not have one drop of gas
