South Philly Poster Run

Phantom Poetry Pole Poster, South Philly

This was a nifty little run with my cobber Brian Howard from the Citypaper again. It used to be that street postering had to have as an element of what Jack London called 'night-time as an essential condition.' For many years now I have worked in New Zealand on bringing street postering into the daylight. Street postering is an extremely important form of communication for the Arts. It is often-times a raw and extremely quick form of communication, but usually manages to maintain a very 'real' and 'authentic' feeling at the same time.

University City, Philadelphia - Poster Run

Pole Posters Photo
It's a beautiful day in New Jersey and the temperature promises to get up to 15 degrees Celsius. The official first day of spring is about two weeks away. On the streets here this morning, I met a guy wearing a sweatshirt with 'Wanganui' across the back (he was an American) and that felt real good. I got on to a conversation about Michael Laws.

Princeton, New Jersey Poster Run. March 5th 2010

There was a break in the weather after basically a month of snow and rain. We just don't get snow like that in New Zealand (a foot at a time), and it's kind of difficult to imagine and to get used to. It would be like trying to drive over the Southern Alps. That way you can imagine it. The streets looked like the Himalayas and after a while you get crazy to do a poster run. People in New Jersey talk about 'weather rage.' Everyone's cooped up and that's not good for anyone.

This poster run happened in about mid February and I had the able assistance of Brian Howard who is the editor of the Philadelphia Citypaper www.citypaper.net Brian is a fan of New Zealand music and we had made contact because of this. He had seen 'The Clean' play in Philadelphia and was immediately impressed. We all are fans of 'The Clean' and will forever be. Brian had also highly rated the Chris Knox 'Stroke' album in the newspaper and this gladdened my heart.

Baltimore Poster Run

This poster run happened on Waitangi Day weekend. The Phantom crew did the run on the Sunday morning in temperatures of 18 degrees Fahrenheit (32 is freezing). We carried posters by Jay Clarkson, Sandra Bell, Michele Leggott, Janet Frame and others. I always try to have a Janet Frame Poem Poster nearby.

We attracted lots of good attention and made some strong contacts within the Baltimore Poetry Scene. Nothing seems to break the ice like putting up Poetry Posters. People always seem to relate to a Poem. Discussion always opens up.

Manhattan New Zealand Poets Poster Run December 2009

Photo from the Manhattan Poets Poster Run

This small poster run of about fifty posters happened after a Phantom Billstickers delegation met with the good people from the Poetry Society of America. From memory, most of the posters were of Brian Turner's fine poem "Keep it Up." I just found it good fun to be out with a staple gun.
