A LETTER FROM VIENNA; by Jossy Gerö

yellow room - Backerstrasse

OUR first day. Willi and I started our phantom poster run through the streets of my home city, Vienna. We started the poster run after a long period of rain, floods and thunder. A deluge that lasted for weeks. It was the wettest spring for 150 years. And longer than I can remember!

There was snow on the mountains, no chance for postering poems in the city. Then. Finally, THE SUN came out...

The Ballad of Phantom Billstickers

I have put up several million posters in the streets of New Zealand over these past few decades and hence given the place a damn good pasting. I have never put up a single poster that I did not think contributed something in some way, whether it was to advertise a band or a brand, a political meeting or a drama group (often the same thing)...I always came away thinking that I was helping someone, somewhere on down the line. Employment depends on advertising. That's a fact. Without marketing you have Estonia in 1952.

Phantom Billstickers on the Boardwalk: Poster Run, Atlantic City, April 17 and 18 2010

Atlantic City Poem Poster Run

We drove an old MK1 Landrover on a hot New Jersey night toward Atlantic City ('AC'). I bet Southside Johnny has driven this route many times and could do so in his sleep. We had the Carolina Chocolate Drops playing loud on the stereo and were ebullient to be doing a clean poster run again and to have found 'open ground'. We were happy to be running free and to be expanding as human beings. It was good.

The Kid was from Shake Rag: Phantom Billstickers Mississippi Delta Poster Run

Phantom Billstickers Mississippi Delta Poster Run

This was a nice, clean run lasting several days whilst driving through the Mississippi Delta in an old Plymouth Fury procured from a rent-a-junk in Nut Bush, Tennessee. As we got closer to the end, Clarksdale, Mississippi, things became very clear. They ended up being clear as a country creek (Truman Capote).

South Philly Poster Run

Phantom Poetry Pole Poster, South Philly

This was a nifty little run with my cobber Brian Howard from the Citypaper again. It used to be that street postering had to have as an element of what Jack London called 'night-time as an essential condition.' For many years now I have worked in New Zealand on bringing street postering into the daylight. Street postering is an extremely important form of communication for the Arts. It is often-times a raw and extremely quick form of communication, but usually manages to maintain a very 'real' and 'authentic' feeling at the same time.
